“I never dreamed that I’d spend so much time talking about bowel movements!”

My name is Sid Chapnick, I am one of the founders of the Denny’s Kick Butt event; BUT I am also a stage 2 rectal cancer survivor, having been diagnosed in 2007.   I’d like to thank you on behalf of the Kick Butt Committee. Cancercare Manitoba Foundation and Denny’s and also say how thrilled I am to be able to stand here 11-years later and thank you for all your support.
The story began nearly12 years ago at my first CancerCare Manitoba support group meeting. Kick Butt was born when I happened to mention that I had been a runner since before the first ;[Manitoba Marathon was run in 1979 and I ran 3 half- marathons in 2006. I casually ccommented that I had never heard of a walk or run for colorectal cancer and I wanted to organize a run to help raise awareness about the disease.   My first co-chair the late Kai Arnot was quite a Pistol; she was the kind of woman you couldn’t say not to! As soon as I walked into that first meeting at CancerCare she handed me a Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada folder as well as a blue colorectal cancer pin, then in her take-charge manner she phoned me up the next day to say she would help me organize the run. That first run surprised us with 200 participants donating $25,000 to CCAC for use in Manitoba.   Don Hutton was another go-getter who worked hard as both my co-chair and Sponsorship chair. Don devoted his battle with cancer to advocating for funding of Avastin and volunteering as a Cancer Coach with CCAC. With him as co-chair we had over 300 participants and raised just under $50,000.   I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention our late spokesperson Lara-Lea Avery Lara-Lea was diagnosed when she was 29 years old. As she said – She wanted to get the message heard that “This disease can happen to anyone at any age”.   All-Together from 2007 to 2017 we raised a total of
$334,856.55 for Colorectal Cancer in Manitoba.

So, basically I’ve only covered the first 5 years of Kicking Butt. After that, I decided to retire. Denny’s has been behind us 100% since day 1. When I decided to try and step back I approached Denny’s and asked what they thought of the idea of becoming our major sponsor. That’s when it became the Denny’s Kick Butt…they provide all the advertising material, fundraise for us year round, and provide all the fabulous food you see here at no charge.

I still do all the Website stuff as well as the Social Media stuff you see throughout the year on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. When Denny’s agreed to take on the sponsorship, I got lucky because my kids decided to take over the committee. Now the committee is comprised entirely of my family, my kids, grandchildren, nephews and several friends such as Dave Parker who has been my sidekick since Day 1 and Dennis Maione. I’m not going to try and name everyone, because Michael and Colin will thank them in their speeches as well.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my story with you today. Sid
